a volley from russia

vladimir putin today issued tough comments directed at the united states:

"Even if dictatorship is packaged in beautiful pseudo-democratic phraseology, it will not be able to solve systemic problems," Putin said. "It may even make them worse."

Putin did not name the United States, but clearly had the administration of President Bush in mind when he said policies "based on the barrack-room principles of a unipolar world appear to be extremely dangerous."
as noted here over the last few days, russia is increasingly finding itself contending with american influence in its backyard. american foreign policy, in the grip of a neoconservative ideology bent on building an "empire of liberty" begun by a rousseauian in an earlier american age, has grown assertive in the former soviet bloc and frames itself in opposition to a russian sphere of influence.
