john yoo and the unitary presidency
the presence of men like yoo, david addington and others in the white house is unfortunately indicative of the bush administration's predilection toward dictatorship -- one so pronounced as to render its bleatings about authoritarianism in russia almost comical (and laced with just a little veiled admiration). that predilection was not the invention of george bush nor even of the acolytes of richard nixon, embodied today in donald rumsfeld and dick cheney. they are but milemarkers on a road that yoo, perhaps inadvertently, points out we have been traveling in fits and starts since andrew jackson occupied the white house.
